MBNJ Yachad 2017 - Week 3

HIGHLIGHTS

Crazy to think we are already at the end of our third week of camp! We had another fun week in camp. On Monday we started our own lemonade stand in the staff lounge and it has been a success!! After long hot days in the sun, the staff at camp enjoys coming to get a nice cool drink. Tuesday was a much more relaxed day due to the fast. But we were back at it on Wednesday. After a morning of work we headed to Bowler City in Hackensack for some fun. We enjoyed an afternoon of bowling with friends. Then it was back in camp just in time to head home for the night. On Thursday we started our planning for the staff activity we will be running this upcoming Wednesday–a cupcake war! We decided on a theme and also discussed what the rules should be and what criteria we should use to judge all the teams. We are looking forward to another restful shabbas before another busy week!

DVAR TORAH: PARSHAT PINCHAS By Avrumi Kalikstein

In the beginning of this week’s parsha, parshas Pinchas, we are told it was Zimri who was killed because of the sin that he committed. His sin is described to us at the end of Parshas Ballak, so why does the Torah wait until a few pesukim into the this parsha to tell us exactly who it was who sinned? The answer is that a person’s behavior or actions can influence those around him for good or bad. Zimri was a big leader during his time and had a big influence over Binei Yisroel. The Torah does not reveal his name until after he was killed so that Beni Yisroel would not think that it is ok to sin like Zimri did. We learn from the story that our actions can influence the people around us, so we should always try to be the best role models we can be and perform good actions so that we can teach other people to do the same.
