Day Ten: Sunday, July 21st (Fast of 17th of Tammuz): Misgav Am, Jeeping, and Learning!

Hi! It is Hannah Kleid, Hannah Lewin, and Shira Ruttenberg.

Today was the 18th of Tammuz and yesterday (the 17th) started the process of the destruction of the Temples. Because the 17th was on Shabbat, we fast on Sunday due to not being allowed to fast on Shabbat. The only time we fast on Shabbat is on Yom Kippur. On this day we fast to commemorate the Beit Hamikdash. Today we went to a lookout and saw a beautiful view of Israel, near the Lebanon border. We heard an interesting story from a man who lives on a kibbutz near the border of Lebanon. After that, we went Jeep riding. We were all split up into 13 groups and we rode around in jeeps seeing beautiful scenery. The ride was bumpy, dusty, and a blast! After the hour plus Jeep ride, we all got back on the bus and headed back to the Hermon Field School and had menucha. Many of us slept, watched movies, and shmoozed with each other. An hour before the fast ended, we all gathered together and sang songs together (slow shira )while watching the sun set. Josh Aranoff then gave a wonderful D’var Torah about the Three Weeks and how it connects to Yad B’Yad. After, we all went to eat break-fast and had a delicious meal of schnitzel, rice, noodles, and more. We then had a night activity run by Razel where we played See, Run, Build. The game teaches us how we all have to work together to create the final product. We were all split up into five groups then each group was divided into three more groups, the see-ers, runners, and the builders. The see-ers described to the runners what the sculptor looked like and the runners then ran back and told the builders what the sculpture looked like based on what they were told. Then we had a contest to see which of the groups sculpture looked the most accurate to the original one Razel had created. Shoutout to Efraim’s group for winning the game. We learned from this night activity how important inclusion and teamwork are and how it applies to our daily lives. We had a wonderful day and cannot wait to see what else is in store for us tomorrow!
