Day 3: Tip Tuesday

Tip #1: Replace Assumptions With Questions

One of the simplest and most powerful ways to practice inclusion is to replace assumptions with questions.

It’s easy to assume what someone can or can’t do, what kind of help they might need, or what will make a space comfortable for them. But even well-intentioned assumptions can miss the mark. Every person experiences the world differently, and what’s helpful for one person may not be helpful for another.

Instead of guessing, try asking. Questions like, “What’s the best way I can support you?” or “Is there anything I should know to make this more accessible?” show respect, openness, and a willingness to listen. They shift the focus from deciding for someone to learning from them.

Asking questions also builds real relationships. When we take the time to listen, we get to know people for who they truly are, not who we assume them to be. That trust and understanding are the foundation of meaningful connection.

When we replace assumptions with questions, we create space for inclusion, connection, and belonging.

Question to Discuss:

  1. Where might you be making an assumption instead of asking a question?
