Day 6: Spread the Word to End the Word

The word retarded is an offensive, demeaning word often improperly used to refer to something stupid, crazy, or annoying. Many people who use the “R-Word” justify it by saying things like “Well, I didn’t mean it like that.” Unfortunately, it doesn’t really matter how a person means it; The “R-word” unfairly links people with special needs to terrible stereotypes, limiting what society believes these individuals are capable of doing.

So today, pledge to end the “R-Word” both from your vocabulary as well as those around you. Be sure to kindly inform your friends and family who may not yet know the pain that this word has caused so many people. Accepting this noble charge aligns you with millions of activists working to create a more inclusive world, one that recognizes the strengths—not the weaknesses—of all its people.

Show your support by sharing a picture of you holding a piece of paper that says “I Pledge to End the “R” Word!” and be sure to tag @Yachad NJCD with the #NAIM and #SpreadtheWordtoEndtheWord”
