Joining a conversation can be tough. Questions like “What are they talking about?” and “Will I know what’s going on?” swim through a person’s mind, discouraging him from offering his opinions and participating in a discussion.
That’s why it’s so important to notice when a new person enters a conversation and to be sure that you take a few seconds to recap what the group has been talking about. Try this: “Hey Adam, it’s so nice to see you and thanks for joining us! Avi was just in the middle of talking to us about his summer plans. Are you doing anything special this year?” While this strategy allows the newcomer to feel informed, it, more importantly, reminds him that his participation is welcomed and appreciated by his friends.
